Virginia’s Northern Neck Peninsula
Northern Neck is the one of three peninsulas (traditionally called “necks” in Virginia) that is furthest north on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. This area is full of history as well as beautiful natural wonders.
Commonly referred to as the “birthplace of our nation”- three of the first five American presidents were born in this area.

Welcome to Our Neck of the Woods
Ever heard that saying and wondered where it originated? Back during the founding of this area, it was extremely hard to navigate and get around. The area stayed almost completely secluded for years and years. And so explorers who originated the area took claim of a piece of land, which would be their “neck of the woods”.
With its historical & heritage sites, parks & trails, wineries, local restaurants, driving tours, and so on – you will have no problem finding things to do in Northern Neck VA.
You may not even want to explore the area, and that is okay. If you just want a private, secluded vacation spot to recharge your spirits. Our hidden gem of the neck, that we call the “RivahHome” is exactly what you’ve been searching for.
The Chesapeake Bay is a major ecological feature that spans across six states in the U.S.. It’s drainage basin collects waters from more than 50 major rivers and streams.
The Chesapeake Bay Natural Scenery
Known for both its beauty and bounty, the Chesapeake bay can be considered a hidden oasis of natural beauty. Making it a great get-a-way spot for some vacation time if you ask me.
The Bay had become “emptier: of its crabs, oysters and watermen in past years do to commercialization. However, restoration efforts began in the 1990’s to replenish the ecology of the area. The health of the Chesapeake Bay has been showing signs of improvement since then and efforts seem to have helped restore the native oyster population.
Come explore the rich history and beautiful landscapes of the Chesapeake, while enjoying a luxury style living in a homestyle house by the river.
If you are a nature person, you will love the area. Deep in the neck of the woods, away from the cities. And a lush environment to explore.
Because of its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, its large expanses of undeveloped land and wetlands, and the passion of the local community to protect and preserve its natural treasures, the four counties of the Northern Neck are a haven for over 250 species of birds.
The habitats of this area vary widely, from farmlands to high river bluffs, from beachfront to river marshes.
Many migrants pass through the area in the spring or the fall, and they can be seen in the right places.
The Northern Neck Chapter of the National Audubon Society (NNAS) holds monthly meetings in Kilmarnock, VA on the first Monday of October thru December and February thru June.
The meetings feature speakers who are experts on some aspect of birds or other related animal species. Please join us at an upcoming NNAS meeting. See the Upcoming Events page at this site for details about the meetings.
